In light of recent statements made simultaneously by different officials that the country came dangerously close to a martial rule, independent senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan warns the public to continuously be on guard against machinations that threaten democracy.

“There were statements made by three different sources. There seems to be a glowing ember where this particular smoke comes from,” says Pangilinan. “Even if these are just rumors, they still serve as warning that we cannot let our guards down and be complacent.”

“Freedom and democracy ultimately rests with the Filipino people. It is within us all, and we must continue guarding it. We must ensure that an election, the ultimate manifestation of democracy, will take place in 2010.”
