KIKO’S PROPOSED RESOLUTION HONORS NBA CHAMP JORDAN CLARKSON

Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan filed a Senate resolution commending American-Filipino basketball player Jordan Taylor Clarkson for his historic victory in the 2026 National Basketball Association (NBA) Championship Finals, making him the first-ever NBA champion of Filipino descent.

Filed on Wednesday, June 17, Proposed Senate Resolution No. 463 aims to formally recognize the New York Knicks’ shooting guard’s “extraordinary achievement” and honor his “instrumental contribution” to the Knicks’ victory.

“NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, as it hereby resolved, that the Senate of the Philippines congratulate and commend Jordan Taylor Clarkson for his historic win in the 2026 NBA Championship Finals, making him the first Filipino NBA Champion, cementing Filipino achievements in the hallowed history of the NBA, and paving the way for future generations of Filipino athletes,” the resolution read.

Clarkson, who has represented the Philippines for national team Gilas Pilipinas at the 2018 Asian Games and the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, is widely recognized as “one of the most successful Filipino basketball players in history,” the resolution added.

Pangilinan also highlighted Clarkson’s critical role as a combo guard and primary ball-handler for the New York Knicks, providing a dynamic offensive spark and exemplary veteran leadership throughout the hard-fought five-game series against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks successfully concluded their post-season campaign with a fiercely contested 94-90 victory over the Spurs in the championship-clinching Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals on June 13, 2026, effectively ending a 53-year championship drought for the franchise.

The resolution also heavily underscores Clarkson’s deep pride in his Filipino roots.

Born to an African-American father, Mike Clarkson, and a Filipino-American mother, Annette Tullao Davis, Clarkson credits his Filipino maternal grandmother, Marcelina Tullao Kingsolver of Bacolor, Pampanga, for immersing him in his Filipino culture.

His father has likewise shared that Clarkson’s profound connection to his Filipino heritage is the foundational motivation behind his stellar career and success.

Beyond his NBA achievements, Pangilinan lauded Clarkson’s advocacy for the empowerment of Filipino youth by “rendering exemplary service and pledging significant resources toward the development and upliftment of grassroots basketball across the country.”

Through the measure, the senator reaffirmed his commitment to advancing initiatives that empower Filipino youth, promote grassroots sports development, and celebrate world-class Filipino talent on the global stage, paving the way for future generations of Filipino athletes in Philippine sports.
