Statement of former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan on the detention of Filipino nationals in Doha

March 30, 2025

I am deeply concerned about the recent reports of several Filipino nationals being detained in Doha, Qatar. At this time, we urge the Philippine government to provide immediate legal and consular assistance to ensure their safety and fair treatment under Qatari law.

Many of our fellow Filipinos leave their families behind to work abroad, enduring hardship and sacrifice just to provide for their loved ones. Their struggles reflect a greater reality: the economic difficulties that push our kababayans to seek opportunities far from home.

This is why we continue to call for urgent solutions to the food crisis and rising cost of living in the Philippines. Walang kulay ang gutom. Walang kulay ang solusyon. Our focus must remain on ensuring that every Filipino—whether here or abroad—has access to decent work, fair wages, and affordable food.

I stand in solidarity with our OFWs and their families, and I call on all sectors, regardless of political affiliation, to work together in upholding their rights and dignity. The government must do everything in its power to protect our fellow Filipinos overseas while addressing the root causes that force them to leave in the first place.

We must never forget: a nation that values and protects its workers—both at home and abroad—is a nation that truly prospers.

Our goal should be to create a Philippines where no Filipino is forced to leave just to survive.
