Kiko to youth: Register to vote, learn about voting process

September 30, 2019

MANILA — Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan is calling on all young people to register to vote, noting that about 10 million young people age 18 to 24 years old failed to do so for the May 2019 senatorial elections.

“That number can very well dictate the direction of the nation. But unless the youth and students register in their vast numbers, it won’t,” Pangilinan said.

“Kung nais natin ng mas maayos na pamumuno at mga tapat na mga halal na opisyal, kailangan mag-umpisa sa ating sariling pagkilos at pagtataya. September 30 ang deadline na magparehistro sa Comelec. Magparehistro! (If we want a better government and honest elective officials, we need to start with our own actions. September 30 is the registration deadline of the Commission on Elections. Register!)” he added.

Relatedly, Pangilinan wants junior and senior high school students to learn the importance of citizen participation in political and electoral processes.

Recognizing that education is crucial in the formation of politically mature Filipinos, Pangilinan has filed Senate Bill 636 or the Compulsory Voter Education Act of 2019 which seeks to integrate voter education in the junior and senior high school curricula.

“Knowledge is power. It is the foundation for revitalizing Philippine democracy. An informed citizenry is our first step to a strong and vibrant democracy. Equipped with correct information, our citizens will be able to make the right choices,” Pangilinan said.
