MANILA, Philippines – Senator Loren Legarda must explain to the people why she made a turnaround when she agreed to become the runningmate of Senator Manny Villar, a senator said Wednesday.

In the 90-day campaign trail, Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan said Legarda would be hard-pressed to explain why she had publicly accused Villar of wrongdoing in the C-5 road scandal, supported his removal as Senate president, and now accepted the offer to become his vice president next year.

After joining the ouster move against Villar, Legarda also supported a Senate investigation into his alleged involvement on the C-5 road controversy.

“The Senate records are there for everyone to see. She must now explain to the voters why she made a U-turn. The inconsistency is glaring. The voters deserve an explanation as to the sudden turnaround” Pangilinan said in a statement.

“One major issue for 2010 is about trust in our public officials. Can we trust our leaders to fulfill their campaign promises? If public leaders go back on their word, on their position on issues, how can we trust them to remain true to their oath of office?” he further asked.

Pangilinan and Villar belong to the so-called “Wednesday Group” along with Senators Joker Arroyo, Vice President Noli de Castro and former Socio-Economic Secretary Ralph Recto.

Pangilinan has supported Villar against the corruption allegations hurled against the senator in the C-5 road controversy but threw his support behind Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, his colleague in the Liberal Party.

Both Aquino and Villar are gunning for the presidency in 2010.
