MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Francis ‘’Kiko’’ Pangilinan, former chairman of the Senate justice committee, threw Saturday his support for Department of Justice (DoJ) Secretary Leila de Lima’s proposal to overhaul the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.
The proposed overhaul was triggered by the controversy spawned by former Batangas Gov. Antonio Leviste, serving time for homicide, who had managed to slip in and out of his privileged living out quarters to see the sights of Metro Manila.
“I support the proposal of DoJ Secretary De Lima for a top-to-bottom overhaul of the BuCor organization. Clearly there is something terribly wrong with the existing set up and the re-assignment or removal of a few personnel will not solve the problem,” Pangilinan said.
