MANILA – Senator Francis ‘Kiko’ Pangilinan filed a Senate resolution yesterday recognizing the world-record breaking performance of the Cobra Philippine Dragon Boat team in the International Dragon Boat Federation’s 10th World Championships in Tampa Bay, Florida.
“The Philippine Dragon Boat team has brought to our country honor and recognition by displaying superiority and excellence in the international competition. For that, they deserve no less than our respect and support,” Pangilinan said.
In his Senate Resolution 547, Pangilinan encouraged the responsible government agency to make steps that would support the Filipino athletes who are giving glory and honor for the country.
“It is unfortunate that we continuously hear about Filipino athletes performing superbly and displaying excellence despite the lack of government support. Our athletes are giving our nation honor and recognition, and they bring hope and exceptional aspirations to our people. It is about time the government’s concerned agencies give their complete and unqualified support to our athletes,” Pangilinan said.
The Filipino community in Florida in the United States celebrated for the impressive performance of the Philippine dragon boat team which bagged five gold medals and two silvers in seven events.
The fired-up Philippine squad started their campaign on a high note when they shattered the world record in the 1,000-meter race event with a new record of four minutes and 57 seconds.
The Filipino paddlers bagged the other two gold medals in the 200-meter and 200-meter mixed divisions, impressing other competitors from other countries.
The Philippines Dragon Boat Federation also won gold medals in the 2007 at 2009 world championships.*PNA
